How To Make A Wooden Hanging Planter Step By Step
Step 1. Get The Tools Ready
Make sure all your equipment is ready to carry out this project.
As you read my article titled ‘How to make a wooden hanging planter,’ I always say you must not use the same tools I used for my project.
I might make use of electric-powered machines, but if you have a manual tool, you can make use of them, or you can substitute some tools for another.
Step 2. Measure Your Pot
Start by measuring the diameter of the top of the pots. You will use a tape, square, meter rule, or a pair of dividers.
We will cut because the pot size will determine the extent of the wood.
Once you have gotten the diameter of your Pot, here is an important note.
I will explain how to get the correct measurements for your garden pot and wood in pictures.
The preferable Pot for this will be a pot with a cone shape in which the bottom is smaller than the top in diameter.
As I said earlier, measure the top of your Pot and write it down on paper, then subtract 2 cm from the what measurement and add 10 cm to get your final measurement for the wood size.
Explanation
If the diameter of your Pot is 15 cm, subtract 2 cm from 15 cm and add 10 cm, which makes a total of 23 cm. Below is simple mathematics.
pot diameter = 15 cm – 2 cm = 13 cm
Add 10 cm extra to the 13 cm to make it 23cm (13 cm + 10 cm = 23 cm)
The final measurement, which is 23 cm, will be used for the wood measurements.
After subtracting 2 cm, which later gave us 13 cm, the final measurement we got from the pot diameter will be used to create a round hole in our wood.
I added an extra 10cm to the final measurement to add a gap between the hole and the wood, which prevents our wood from breaking.
After making our hole, we want each side of the wood to have an extra 5 cm. The idea is that each wooden base is slightly larger than the total diameter of the Pot.
Feel free to add extra measurements, but ensure they fall under even numbers so each side will be equal.
The image is demonstrated below.
I subtracted 2 cm from the port diameter size because we don’t want the hole to be too big for our Pot.
So subtracting 2 cm will let the Pot sit firmly on the hole without falling. The subtraction makes the wood hold the Pot towards the neck area. Check out the image below.

Step 3. Measuring And Cutting The Wood
The first step to creating your new homemade hanging planter is to cut the wood into a square shape.
Use the total size obtained from the pot diameter ( 23 cm ) to cut your wood into a square shape.
If you don’t understand how I got this 23 cm, go back and read step 2.
Cut as much wood as you want, but consider the height of hanging your planter to the floor.
In my case, I will cut five square boards since I want to hang them on the ceiling.
In this case, it is designed for a room with a reasonably high ceiling and comprises five levels.
If your ceiling is lower, you can reduce the number of wood, but I prefer 5 in my case.
Your own can be more or less, depending on the design you have in mind and the height of your ceiling.
To start cutting, use a jigsaw and a specific saw blade for wood, selecting a medium speed to not damage the material.
If you need to, secure the wood with a clamp to make the job easier.
I have an article showing how I cut my wood without damaging, splitting, or cracking the wood. If you’re interested, read by clicking here. [Link]
How To Make Wooden Hanging Planter Step 4: Create A Circle In The Center Of The Wood
It is time to create a hole in each piece of wood to fit the pots.
With the help of a square, draw two diagonals from corner to corner to mark the center of the wooden squares.
After subtracting 2 cm from 15 cm [13 cm total answer], The round hole we want will be 13 cm.
To make a round hole of 13cm, we have to divide 13 cm into two, Which is 6.5 cm.
Attach your pencil to the compass and Use your compass to measure 6.5 cm on a square or ruler.
Use the sharp point Of your compass to place it in the middle of the two diagonals and draw a circle of 6.5 cm.
After making the circle the 6.5 cm, we add it up to give a 13 cm circle.
Once you have traced the circumferences with the compass, use a drill to make a hole through which you can pass the blade of a jigsaw.
Use a jigsaw to cut the circumference and open the hole in the pieces.
If you prefer using a router, I have an article showing you how to cut a perfect circle with a router. If you’re interested, click ready now.
How To Make A Wooden Hanging Planter Step 5: Create The Holes For The Rope
It is time to make the holes to pass the rope. You have to do four per piece, all at the exact measurement.
That way, once hung, the pieces will be straight and aligned.
Take advantage of the diagonals marked on the wood and mark four points on each board about three centimeters from the wood edge.
Drill the holes with a drill and a bit of the same diameter as the string you will use.
How To Make A Wooden Hanging Planter Step 6: Sand The Pieces Of The Hanging Planter
It’s time to sand all the pieces very well. This way, you can eliminate any remaining dust or splinters that may have appeared after cutting the wood.

How To Make A Wooden Hanging Planter Step 7: Paint the wooden pieces and pots.
We have decided to apply a varnish to the wood, which protects it and gives it a touch of color, revealing the beta. Read how to waterproof a planter by clicking read now.
For the pots, however, we used spray paint. When you are done with the painting, let your work dry. Also, read how to clean a spray paint gun. [Link]
How To Make A Wooden Hanging Planter Step 8.: Placing The Rope
When everything is dry, it is time to assemble the hanging planter. To do this, cut two lengths of rope with a size that doubles the height you want the planter to be from one end to the other.
If, for example, you want the flower pot to be one meter high, each section should measure two meters.
When you have the pieces of rope, fold them in half and join them at their centers with a knot.
Do this to create a loop at the top, which you will then use to hang the planter from the ceiling.
When you finish, you should have four lengths of rope joined by the knot.
Once you have the knot, use masking tape to sellotape the ends of each piece of rope or burn the end of the rope.
The masking tape and label the rope to pass through freely in the holes in the pieces of wood without the rope being scattered or fraying.
Then, pass the four lengths of rope through the holes in the wooden hanging planter.
Once you have finished passing the first wood, securing it with a knot at the bottom makes the gap about 30 cm.
You can use a marker to mark the rope where you want to knot it and ensure all the rope is straight and equal.
Continue adding more wood till you reach the final wood, and make sure the gaps are equal to the rope and straight.
And all the pieces of wood are straight. When you’re done, cut the excess rope.
How To Make A Wooden Hanging Planter Step 9: Hang The Structure From The Ceiling And Place The Pots.
To hang the structure, make a hole in the ceiling and insert the ceiling hook to support the structure’s weight.
Insert a socket into it and hang the planter. Place the pots and that’s it.
