What Is Needed To Build A Wooden Planter Box

Below is the list of tools needed to build a planter box. Some tools are expensive, and some are not.

If you feel like using any manual tools, go on, provided we landed on the same page.

I will be using electrical tools, but if you have a manual tool, there is no problem since you can control them. It is a good idea for you.

But let’s detail the tools and materials you need to create the perfect wooden planter.

1–  Wooden pallet: wood can come from recycled pallets, planks at home, or old furniture.

The origin does not matter; it must be considered whether it is in good condition.

2– Sander; this little machine will help you achieve a smoother, high-quality look. You can also use sandpaper, but the processing time will be longer.

3– Nails or screws: the nail will be used to join the pieces of wood.

4– Hammer or screwdriver: to fix the planks.

If you are going for a nail, you need a hammer, but if you use screws, you need a screwdriver or screw machine.

5– Metal grid: this element will be the one that prevents water pooling.

6– Plastic Polythene or waterproof: it will be used to prevent soil and water from coming into contact with the wood.

Any plastic that is a little thick and of quality will do (for example, the substrate bags).

7– Varnish: it will protect the planter from inclement weather if the objective is to place it in outdoor areas.

8– Brush: to spread the protective wood varnish.

Another element that can be used is, for example, decorative paint for the outside of the pot, but this is up to the user.

9 jigsaw or handsome; this is used to cut the pallet into a desirable length.

How To Make A Wooden Planter Box Step By Step

Now the elements that will be used to build the wooden planters are known, it is time to analyze the steps to be taken.

We analyze this step so that the creation of this container occurs without incident, without doubt, and in the best possible way.

The steps to make the wooden planters are as follows:

step 1. Since we will use a wooden pallet, you should first separate the different planks.

Do it carefully because you can break the boards or hurt yourself. Remember that it is possibly old wood so it will be more sensitive to handling.

step 2. Once you have the pieces separated, it’s time to sand them. Use a sander or sandpaper if manually two smooth the surface of the wood.

You will know they are perfect when they are completely smooth and have no splinters.

But this is optional, but I prefer making my wood smooth so it will look beautiful when I apply the varnish.

step 3. Now is the time to cut them. You must be clear about the size and shape (rectangular, square, etc.) you want the planter to have and act accordingly.

The boards are the same size, and some will be used to form the legs.

Cut the slats to assemble the planter’s frame with the jigsaw or a handsaw.

Considering the pallet boards are 7 cm wide, I have cut 8 slats 40 cm long for the edge, 4 of 66 cm for the front and back, and 4 of 25 cm for the sides.

step 4. Assemble the structure. I have used a template to drill and screw diagonally for this, but you can also use fixing brackets.

step 5. Measure the four corners of the inside planter and take the measurement.

I can’t give you the exact measurement here because the inside measurement differs from mine.

Once you get the measurement, cut plywood accordingly and cover the four sides.

Note; for economic purposes, if you want to use the pallet to cover the four corners, you are free but make sure you join the edges together to cover gaps.

step 6. Make the legs by cutting a 10 cm long board with the ends at a 15º angle and then decrease diagonally.

step 7. Measure the outside length of the bottom and take the measurement. Now Cut 2  slats for both sides.

step 8. Screw the legs to the pallet wood and leave at least 5 cm from the 2 edges. Do this for the bot slat.

Assemble the slat with the legs to your planter’s bottom length. When scrolling, let the two ages flush together.

step 9. Measure the with and cut the pallet. After you have finished cutting, join the with and make it flush.

step 10. When you have the structure made, it is time to place the bottom of the planter.

This process requires that the measurements you have taken are exact. Otherwise, you will have to cut the planks again.

step 11. You must protect the wooden planter box from the weather if you have already achieved a firm structure. Use protective varnish and spread this substance evenly.

step 12. And you’re almost done! As you well know, water stagnation can negatively affect the species you decide to cultivate.

The best way to prevent this buildup is to drill holes in the base, as these will function as small drains.
