What Are The Safety Precautions To Take Before Drilling A Wall

when drilling a wall for cable Safety is very important in every work. A wise craftsman will always protect himself From injury.

When you are in your injury today, you will not be able to work to memory. Let us look at the safety precautions to take before drilling a wall.

Protect Yourself Before Drilling.

How to drill a wall for cable; Firstly, before discussing how to drill a hole in a wall for cable, we must consider our safety precautions to avoid injury.

We need a safety glove, dust nose mask, and eyeglasses to protect our bodies from injury.

Drilling walls generate dust that can affect the eyes and nose, so we need our nose masks and eyeglasses for protection.

Make sure no objects around you make you inconvenient so you won’t fall out of the process because falling with a hammer drill can make the drill chuck lock.

Check For Wireline In The Wall Before Drilling

Before we drill the wall, look around our walls, tracing our wall switch or lamp holder to dictate where electric cables run through our house.

We can dictate The Wire in our wall using an electric detector or manual method, but don’t worry.

In this article, I will show you how to detect wire on walls manually and electrically.

Knowing where the electric cables run through the house can be difficult if you live in a rented apartment, except we do some Discovery.

Electricians wire our house from the ceiling to the floor, so drilling above the switch or lamp holder is dangerous because the electric wire is located above the socket or bulb 💡.

But most story buildings are sometimes wired from the decking to the ceiling.

Hence, avoiding Drilling above and below switches and bulbs is best, except you have the electrician’s plan.

Check For Pipe In The Wall Before Drilling.

If water pipes run around your house, mainly in the kitchen and toilet, walk around the building to check how the pipe was connected, or use an electric detector.

We can detect water pipes in our walls by looking for tap and shower heads.

For example, plumbing a toilet or room 1 pipe is the supplier, so once one pipe is damaged, the whole water system shuts down.

So, how can I dictate the pipe if a tap is located at the left and the order at the right or above in the right corner?

Draw a line from the tap head to the shower to the other water valve or tap. Please ensure the lines are straight because the pipe passes through those lines you draw.

Know The Strength Of The Wall Before Drilling

Before drilling a wall for cable, we must check the material’s strength before Drilling.

The strength of the materials tells us how to forcefully drill the wall or the kind of bit we use, long or short.

Some walls are built with bricks, while some are built with wood. It is essential to know all the types of bits we have and the right bits for a particular job.

You know more about the type of bit and their material. We have already prepared the article for you 👉click here to read it now. [Link]

Find Out What Is Behind The Wall Before Drilling.

How to drill a wall for cable to pass through, we must first walk around our building to know what is behind The Wall.

If you live in a rented apartment where the building is divided between you and your neighbor, check very well so you won’t drill into someone’s room.

How Do You Detect Electric Wire In A Wall Before Drilling

Are you planning to put frames, shelves, or a light fixture on the wall? It is necessary to drill holes. However, this can be dangerous.

Electrical wires and conduits circulate in your walls. It is essential to protect yourself to avoid any electrical accidents.

To do this, we explain how to detect an electrical cable in a wall because of safety.

Why Avoid Electrical Cables When Drilling?

Why avoid electrical cables when drilling? We avoid electric wire when drilling for our safety. Drilling into an electrical wire can result in electrocution.

The human risk is significant. So, we can only advise you to cut off the power before doing your work.

On the other hand, this prevents damage to your electrical installation.

Suppose you drill a hole in a wall and come across an electrical cable. In that case, you only have to call an electrician to repair your installation.

Considering the cost of the intervention of a professional and that of a materials detector, it is better to equip yourself to avoid any incident.

How To Detect An Electrical Cable In A Wall With A Detector

electric dictator

Today, there is a simple and effective solution: the materials detector. No need to be an electrical expert; this device is very easy to use.

Please turn on the detector and pass it along a wall.

Not all devices work in the same way, but some, like that of the Stanley brand, offer detection with audible and visual signals that guide the user to the right location of the cable using arrows.

When the device faces an electrical cable, the indicator turns red, and an audible signal sounds. Simple and efficient.

If you can’t purchase the material detector, other detectors show like X-rays so you can see the structure of your wall.

How To Detect A Wire Without A Detector

It is also possible to analyze the configuration of your space.

Electricians, when wiring your house, set up vertical or horizontal networks.

Also, the cable is pulled from the floor to the ceiling for a vertical installation.

This means that you should avoid drilling above a switch or bulb; there is a good chance you will come across an electrical wire.

Another solution: find the plans for the house. Your electrician may have left a plan for his electrical installation.

The plan allows you to automatically detect the presence of cables and, therefore, drill a hole in a wall in the best place.

How To Drill A Wall For Cable

Step 1: Wear dust masks, protective eyeglasses 👓, and gloves. 🧤 To avoid injury or inhaling dust particles.

Step 2: decide the point where you want to drill and Mark with a pencil.

If you don’t want to dirty your wall with a pencil, take a masking tape to tape the area you want to drill and Mark with a pencil.

Step 3: at the point you Mark out for Drilling, Use a nail and hammer to make a hole.

Please avoid using the nail to scatter your wall the hole we help to guide your drilling bit from moving away from your drill point.

Use a nail and hammer to make a hole.

Step 4: the size of the hole depends on the wire size, or if you prefer guiding your wire inside an electric pipe, that will be the best option to avoid dust from coming out.

In my case, I will not use an electric pipe to pass my wire, but don’t worry; I will show you how to do both pipe and no-pipe methods.

Working guide: Let us assume the total diameter of our electric cable is 15 mm and assume the pipe we want to pass our 15 mm cable is 18 mm.

How To Drill Wall For Cable And Pipe To Pass.

How to drill a wall for cable In this section, we are working on our electric cable and pipe. At this point, we are about to drill the hole based on the size of a pipe 18 mm.

To drill a hole of 18mm, we need concrete bits of 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. You can use your available one, but make sure you start from a smaller one to a large one.

How To Drill A Wall For Cable

How to drill a wall for cable I am showing you how to drill for only cable size in this section. Assuming our cable is 15 mm, we need a bit of 10 mm and 15 mm.

Step 5: Insert the smallest concrete bit into the drill chuck and place the bit on the point that you have made for Drilling.

Start drilling with the normal mode function and drill to 1.5 cm deep to create a better balance for the bit before switching to the hammer function.

Step 6: use the drill function to increase the speed until you reach the second hard layer [ the last part of the wall plaster].

 drill function

At this point, you will notice the wall is loose because you have passed the first plaster, and now you are at the main block, which is Sandy.

Step 7. To penetrate through the last layer, the opposite side of the wall, you must change the drill function to normal so you won’t crack the opposite side.

Drill gently when getting to the final point of the opposite wall with a normal drill function. It will help you to get a drill.

If you also have someone who will use a board to support the opposite side of your wall at the drill point, it will also help greatly, but this is optional.

Using the board method is a good idea to prevent your wall from splintering. The same method board I use for drilling wood without splintering.

Step 8: insert your pipe before passing your wire through, but if you do not use a pipe, pass your wire through.

If you are using a pipe, insert the pipe and measure the opposite side of the wall.

But make sure the pipe is not longer than the wall; instead, reduce 2 cm from the pipe measurement and the wall.

Step 9 uses cement to cover the space left. Make sure to leave the pipe in the middle, leaving 1 cm each in front of both sides of the wall.

Please take a little cement in your hand and cover the 1 cm gap we left. The cement will serve as a stopper for the pipe from falling out.

FAQ

While Drilling, My Drilling Bit Got Broken; What Should I Do

Removing a broken drill from a workpiece is essential, but I can’t tell you how to do it here.

👉click here to learn how to remove a broken bit using my easy method.[Link]

What If I Have Only One Drill Bit? What Should I Do?

1] If you have one drilling bit, for example, 10 mm, drill through using the abovementioned step.

Use a rod to force it through the hole from the front to the middle and then go to the opposite wall to do the same to avoid cracking your wall.

2] Another method is to use that drill bit to drill through following the step I provided above.

Once you have successfully made the hole through, continue drilling, but move your hammer drill to all corners of the wall to expand the hole.

Can I Drill My Wall Bigger Than My Pipe Or Cable?

Yes, you are free to drill your hole bigger than the item you want to pass through this reason:

Maybe in the future, you want to pass the bigger wire.

But I prefer the hole to be the same diameter as what I want to pass through because of crawling insects and rats.

But suppose you still insist on leaving the hole wider. In that case, you can use fabric or paper to cover the remaining space to prevent anything from entering your apartment.

What If My Hole Is Bigger Than What I Expect

If your hole is bigger than your cable or pipe, here are what to do:

1. Use paper or fabric to cover the remaining space after passing through your cable or pipe.

2. You are free to drop cement or filler at the down level of the hole before passing your pipe or wire.

Then, if there are still gaps inside, cement to fill them up.

If you want to pass an electric wire and don’t want cement to hold it, you can pull it out anytime.

Rob the wire oil and wrap the wire coating with a waterproof piece before filling the gap with cement, but make sure that the oil does not mix up with the cement so the cement can’t hold.

When the gap has filled with cement, leave it for some time; when the cement has dried, twist the wire so it will be free gumming together.

Once everything has dried up, you can use a razor blade to trim off the waterproof from showing outside the wall.

What If I Don’t Have Cement To Guide My Pipe

If the hole is too big and you don’t have a cement plane, a piece of wood and use the piece to support the gap.

make sure the pipe is tight, or use gravel, hardcore, or wire to fill the gap.

Make sure you push the material you decided to use as a filler inside so it won’t deter your work.

I Don’t Want A Pipe, But The Hole Is Producing Dust; What Should I Do?

If you are drilling on a cement wall, I mean a block that is not a concrete cast, it will likely produce dust.

1] Blow off the dust, mix cement and water without sand, and ensure the water is small because raw cement needs little water.

Mix till it is thick and pour it inside the hole both Up, Down, and Connor so it will serve as plaster.

2] You can use a wall filler or gum that looks like a filler to spread around the whole, especially the front of the hole.
