Can My Pet [Cat And Dog] Die By Eating Snake Plant Leaves?

It is possible for your pets, such as cats and dogs, to be killed by eating snake plant leaves.

A snake plant leaf contains a harmful chemical known as saponins, which can be toxic to dogs and cats.

If your cat or dog eats snake plant leaves, the possibility of them dying depends on some setting conditions:

  • The number of leaves they eat
  • The age of the pet
  • The  size of your pet and
  • The health status of the pet

The Amount Of Snake Plant Leaves Eaten By The Pet.

If your cat or dog eats less snake plant leaves, the less toxicity in the animal.

But if your cat or dog consumes the snake plant Leaf in large quantities, the higher toxicity on the animal.

It is generally known that if any living thing consumes much poison, they will suffer more harm than when they consume it a little.

The Age And Size Of The Pet Matter When They Eat Snake Plant

The size of the animals depends on how poisonous a snake plant reacts toward your cat or dog.

If a puppy dog or kitten consumes snake plant leaves, it tends to disturb them more than an adult cat or dog.

Since plant saponins have a foaming effect that causes digestive distress, they also induce cell death by interfering with regular cell pathways.

The Health Condition Of The Pet When Consuming Snake Plant

When your pet cat or dog is ill, their body system becomes weak, and the pet cannot endure pain.

A weak pet from illness can easily die when attacked with poison from the snake plant.

It is because the pet’s body system is weak and cannot retain or fight the poison in the body.

If a healthy pet consumes snake plants, its body system can cope with the poison because they are strong enough to resist pain.

Nevertheless, in this article, I explain how to treat your pets at home when they consume snake plants. It is the first aid at home.

How To Treat Your Dog And Cat From Snake Plant Poisoning AT HOME (What To Do If A Dog Or Cat Eats A Snake Plant)

If you notice your dog or cat has eaten a snake plant, follow this procedure I provide for you because my three years old dog was a victim.

Firstly: If your dog or cat has eaten a snake plant, the first thing you should do is to prevent other pets from eating the leaf particle.

Ensure you search for the leftover particles of the snake plant leaves eaten by your pet.

If you see any, pick and dispose of them to avoid other of your remaining pet or baby from picking them and eating them.

Secondly: rinse the mouth of your car or dog with clean water to avoid more toxicity of the snake plant from getting into your pet’s throat.

Thirdly: bathe your dog or cat using warm water to remove poison from the snake plant that might still be in your pet’s skin.

Ensure you wash the sensitive part of the dog or cat (eyes, nose, ear) properly because there might be some contact with the snake plant and your pet.

Fourthly: provide your dog or cat with antibiotics medicine to calm down any other reaction in the pet system.

Monitor your cat or dog for the next 24 to 48 hours to see any improvement. Your dog or cat might always be thirsty and likely to rest.

The pet might be weak at that moment. Sometimes the pet might lose an appetite.

If there is no improvement for the next 24 or 48 hours, seek medical attention.
